RULES

  • Pre-Registration starts at 6:30AM and is NOT mandatory
  • You must be 14 years old or under
  • A person cannot catch a fish and let another person use that fish to claim a prize.
  • Any person cannot actively fish for another person (handicapped excluded). (see note 1)
  • Fish must be caught during derby hours
  • You may only win one place (i.e. You can't win both 1st and 3rd place in your age group)

Note 1: Parents/Guardians can assist with tying lines, putting bait on the hook, casting bobber-hook-bait, and "setting the hook only".

Clarification: A Parent may cast a lure for children under 10 but must pass the fishing pole to the child immediately after casting!

 

Prohibited: Any person casting a lure and retrieving the lure until a fish is hooked and handing the rod off to another person where the fish will be used to claim any prize.

SPORT FISH PIN AWARD

Sportfish Pin Awards--Anglers receive bronze pins for catching fish of certain minimum weight requirements for 22 species. Anglers must have their catch weighed at a certified scale from any location and submit an affidavit and photo of their catch to the Sportfishing Awards Coordinator. Additionally, anglers who catch the largest fish in each category receive a gold pin and plaque commemorating their accomplishment. Traditionally, the "gold pin winners" are honored every February at a special Sportfish Awards Ceremony held at the Eastern Outdoor and Fishing Exposition in Worcester. Nearly 500 pins are awarded annually. Beginning in 2005, a youth category was added to recognize anglers 17 years and younger for the accomplishments.

Massachusetts 2007 Angler of the Year Roy Levya will be at this year’s fishing derby with a certified scale to weight the kid’s catches. If the fish’s weight qualifies (please look at weights in the YOUTH section of this chart.) then Roy will help with the filling out of an affidavit that will be sent to Mass Fisheries and Wildlife in order to receive a bronze pin! (Maybe even a gold pin if the fish is the biggest of the year in Massachusetts)
